Doherty Sues Management Team Over Breast Cancer Diagnosis
Former “Beverly Hills 90210” star, Shannen Doherty, revealed Wednesday that she has breast cancer and filed a lawsuit against her old business management team for allowing her health insurance to lapse.
The lawsuit alleges that her former business managers, Tanner Mainstain Glynn & Johnson LLP, failed to perform critical tasks under their agreement including paying her health insurance premium for 2014. It was not until after the firm terminated their relationship in February of 2014 that Doherty learned her insurance policy with the Screen Actors Guild had lapsed for that year.
Doherty alleges that because her insurance had lapsed, she could not regularly visit the doctor and could not re-enroll until the 2015 re-enrollment period. She states in her complaint that she did not learn until a doctor visit in March of 2015 that she had “invasive breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node.” Doherty seeks to hold Tanner Mainstain liable for the progression of her breast cancer because, if her health insurance had not lapsed, she would’ve maintained regular doctor visits that could’ve yielded the breast cancer diagnosis at an earlier stage.
In response, Tanner Mainstain released a statement: “Tanner Mainstain is saddened to learn that Ms. Doherty is suffering from cancer and wishes her a full recovery, [h]owever, the claim that Tanner Mainstain caused her to be uninsured, prevented her from seeking medical care, or somehow contributed to her cancer is patently false. Tanner Mainstain will aggressively defend all of Ms. Doherty’s claims in court.”
