Stevie Wonder’s Alleged Blackmailer Claims the Higher Ground in Suit Against TMZ for Eavesdropping on Trial

Alpha Walker was on trial for allegedly extorting Stevie Wonder (by threatening to release a potentially embarrassing video tape).  In a strange turn of events, Walker is now suing TMZ for planting hidden microphones on the judge’s bench and recording privileged conversations during the extortion trial.

TMZ had been admitted to the courtroom to film the “on the record” portions of the proceedings.  Apparently, Judge Ray G. Jurado discovered that microphones had been planted on his bench and at the tables for both the prosecution and the defense.  Upon questioning by the Judge, a TMZ cameraman admitted that he had placed the devices.  Judge Jurado expressed significant displeasure over the actions, noting “I was not aware of this microphone.  Had I been aware, I would have made sure that it was either removed from the bench . . . or turned off or both.  This will not happen again.”

Walker’s suit against TMZ includes claims for invasion of privacy, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and eavesdropping on confidential communications.  Additionally, Walker wants an injunction filed against TMZ to prevent it from making such recordings in the future.  Ian Wallach, Walker’s attorney, noted, “Without trusting that confidential communications are just that – confidential – cases can’t be prosecuted or defended.  Everyone loses . . . .  The transcript shows that we need greater policing of in-court press practices.  What the system requires is a guarantee that this won’t happen against – and this action seeks that guarantee.”
