On Monday, November 10, a lawsuit was filed in Denver against television commentator, Nancy Grace, for defamation. Known for her aggressive on-air antics, Grace could be facing more than just one complaint.
The lawsuit filed this week stems from a false crime report out of Denver back in January. A woman, after putting her children to bed at night, saw a man’s photo on her cell phone and called the cops. She told the police she thought he broke into her home, took a selfie with her cell phone, and left. Nancy Grace got her hands on the story and felt the need to chime in. Grace aired the photograph, and told viewers the man was a home invader and that this behavior is a textbook serial killer’s calling card. Unfortunately, the crime report was entirely false.
The photograph actually belonged to a man named Ben Seibert, and it came off of his facebook account. Upon hearing from friends about the incident a week later, he called the police and explained the situation. He was not charged. Nancy Grace however did not check the facts and ran the story anyway. Even after the police contacted her to tell her the broadcast was false, she continued to air it. Seibert was humiliated across social network and was branded the “selfie stalker.” His attorney wants other people who’ve been victimized by Nancy Grace’s unethical commentary to come forward. The lawsuit seeks $100,000 in damages.
